Sample assessments
Good collection of links to rubrics for assessing various types of student work
Good links here - some are to rubrics they've created (will say A+ at top). Those can be used/adapted AS LONG AS you give credit to source of original. Other links go to other sites - check before using/adapting to see if it's allowed.
Creating rubrics
Rubistar is a free tool to create rubrics. You can start with suggested categories and descriptors for many different projects and browse rubrics other teachers have created. Rubrics can be saved online to be retrieved and edited later (must register for free account) or downloaded to print. Create a few samples. Can you create (from suggested categories) a rubric to assess a student's movie, podcast, other multimedia presentation? You might also search for rubrics created by other teachers.
Creating puzzles
Allows you to create simple word searches, word jumbles, crosswords, and math worksheets. Can save offline a printable pdf file of puzzle and/or answer key. Can be saved online, but only for a couple of months, after which it is deleted, and it requires you to use the same computer on which you created it to view the saved puzzle - not very convenient if you move around, So this one is good if you just want to create and save a pdf file of a puzzle and the answer key. You won't be able to change the pdf file later, but you can save it and print it as often as you like.
Site no longer supports free login to save puzzle, and some of links don't work, but puzzlemaker still works fine and is easy to use, and one of the advantages is that once you create the puzzle, you can copy/paste the clues and the image that is the puzzle grid (two separate copy/paste exercises) into a Word document and save it. You can't change the grid once you copy/paste it, but at least you can save a copy of the Word document for future use. Use criss-cross type for crosswords.
Creates crosswords and word searches. It's quick, easy, and free, but don't be misled by statement that says you can save your puzzle. That's true, but you have to buy a program from them to be able to edit/work with that saved puzzle later. You can view and print the puzzle and the answer key, but the printouts will look like a webpage printout, and there is no way to export it as a pdf or copy/paste it into Word.
This program is installed in the Mooney Mac lab (under Teacher Tools on Mac side) and can be used to create crossword or word search puzzles that can be saved, printed, or made interactive and posted for students to complete on your website. It's by far the most powerful of the puzzle tools listed here. You can save the puzzle offline and return to work on it later as long as you have access to the program. You can export the completed puzzle as a pdf file and save it indefinitely and don't need the program to print out the pdf file. Answer key can be printed or saved as pdf too. Only disadvantage is you can only use it in Mooney Mac lab (not free and online) unless you buy and download it yourself. Crossword Forge is available for purchase (Mac or Windows either one) from SOL Robots who also sells a program called Quiz Press that allows you to create quizzes for printing or posting on the Web.
