From 1958 to 1984, NL operations used radioactive materials consisting mostly of depleted uranium (DU), although smaller amounts of thorium and enriched uranium were also used between 1960 and 1972. Operations reduced depleted uranium tetrafluoride to depleted uranium metal which was then made into shielding components, ballast weights, and projectiles. In addition, from 1966 to 1972, NL manufactured fuel from enriched uranium for experimental nuclear reactors (USACE 2001b).

What is needed in the depleted uranium "debate" isn't more study, but brutal honesty. Depleted uranium isn't the cause of any syndrome -- except a highly political and imaginary one. What is more, it has become part of an ugly bill of particulars against the United States.

I am stunned by the thought that we, the "civilized" nations, have bombed cities and country sides and islands for a hundred years. Yet, here in the United States, which is responsible for most of that, the public, as was true of me, does not understand--I mean really understand--what bombs do to people. That failure of imagination, I believe, is critical to explaining why we still have wars, why we accept bombing as a common accompaniment to our foreign policies, without horror or disgust.

Jim Harding, a Canadian uranium expert is battling industry expansion in Ottawa area.

“Radon gas, only one by-product of the uranium decay chain, is known as the second leading cause of lung cancer,” Harding said. “The Mississippi, Ottawa and Rideau River watersheds – and all those who live on or near them – are at risk of radioactive contamination if uranium mining is allowed to proceed.” Harding is a retired professor of environmental and justice studies. As Director of Research in School of Human Justice at the University of Regina, he headed up the Uranium Inquiries Project. Harding will visit Ottawa, Wakefield, Perth and Carleton Place from Jan. 22 to 26. There are approximately 30,000 acres of active uranium claims in eastern Ontario, which affect unceded Algonquin land and private property near Sharbot Lake.

Diabetes and cancer are both expanding almost exponentially in the world today and can in part be traced to the increasing radiation to which we are all being exposed. Every physician knows that radiation can lead to cancer, but making a connection between radiation and diabetes seems ludicrous at first glance but is anything but. Most medical doctors have never heard of this and neither have they paid attention to the fact that mercury and other toxic chemicals are also primary causes of diabetes. Even though there is little research into the connection between radiation poisoning and diabetes we should not remain blind, deaf and dumb about it.

The VA report indicates that 2,312,675 U.S. troops who were on active duty between August 1990 and August 2007, have died. Clearly millions of soldiers on active duty in and from 1990 are not dead of old age or natural causes by 2007. We believe the injured troops are rushed back to the U.S. before they are dead, injured troops naturally are no longer on active duty, conveniently they die when they are no longer active and not counted amongst those "dying in Iraq".

The report describes an increase in uranium prices from $21 per kilogram to $200 per kilogram over the past eight years. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds. This tenfold price jump has transformed a portion of the Department of Energy's (DOE) depleted uranium inventory from an environmental liability into a potential $7.6 billion asset, the report claimed.

There were pictures posted on several news websites of Israeli soldiers loading these DU weapons onto Israeli tanks. These photographs mysteriously disappeared from several news websites just after they were published, but a few were retrieved from the Getty archive (6): Correspondent Robert Fisk wrote in the Independent in October 2006 that "scientific evidence gathered from at least two bomb craters in Khiam and At-Tiri, suggests that uranium-based munitions may now also be included in Israel's weapons inventory - and were used against targets in Lebanon.

This source is not admired by the anti-DU movement. Many say this is a move to limit government liability by focusing on "proven" exposure according to their tests.

Parrish said that the study showed that while exposure to DU might be rare among Gulf War veterans, the effects of that exposure can be long lasting. He said that the new test provides a way to resolve cases in which exposure is uncertain or becomes a legal issue

Doctors in Afghanistan say rates of some health problems affecting children have doubled in the last two years. Some scientists say the rise is linked to use of weapons containing depleted uranium (DU) by the US-led coalition that invaded the country in 2001. A Canadian research group found very high levels of uranium in Afghans during tests just after the invasion.

The European Parliament said there should be a moratorium on the use of uranium weapons, including by the European Union and NATO, because “their use in warfare contradicts the rules and principles of international, humanitarian and environmental law.”

A depleted uranium munition is the ultimate sample for a periodic table collection, because of the great difficulty in getting one. Unfortunately, I don't have one: This sample is only a practice round that contains no actual depleted uranium. Sniff. It weighs about 8 pounds, which might sound like a lot, but if it were real, it would be about to two and a half times heavier.

The new cases, and the number of deaths among children, have risen after "special weaponry" was used in the two massive bombing campaigns in Fallujah in 2004.
