Andi Sibley's List: Tech training for librarians and teachers

• So, to make RSS much easier to understand, in Oprah speak, RSS stands for: I’m “Ready for Some Stories”. It is a way online for you to get a quick list of the latest story headlines from all your favorite websites and blogs all in one place. How cool is that? (Click on image for larger view) 

• The purpose of this course is to provide ”Just in Time” training through an online interface for K-12 educators based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). These standards are the basic technology skills every educator should possess.

• It’s valuable to know how to use this stuff, but the focus should never  be on the tools. Never. I know they’re fun to play with and it’s exciting to see  the cool things other libraries have done with them, but that shouldn’t impact  whether you use the technology or not.
• Unless you see a real need that could be filled by a blog, your library does not  need a blog.
• How can we know what our patrons need and want if we’re not doing assessment?
• By not giving people time to learn on the job and to work with these emerging  technologies, staff end up feeling like their administrators are only paying lip  service to Library 2.0 and Web 2.0.
• Working to meet changing user needs
• Believing in our users
• being able and willing to experiment
• looking for partnerships
• Looking outside of the library world
• They didn’t want to have to log into the library. They didn’t want to have to  search multiple databases. They didn’t want to learn new systems. And they  wanted us to have more full-text articles available online so they didn’t have  to use interlibrary loan
• They just want to get the resources they need in the shortest amount of time so  they can get their research done.

• The most powerful libraries in the future will be technology agnostic, providing  access to information and knowledge regardless of format. Print, digital, audio,  video, and human expertise all combine to transform the library into a symphony  of community learning. By integrating innovative uses of technology into the  life of libraries, they become integrated it into the lives of the communities.

• a new social networking site, Muse (http://k20.internet2.edu).

• The Muse site allows easy location of and communication with other teachers  and librarians as well as with subject-area experts in the higher education and  research communities, with resource providers from museums, zoos, science and  performing arts centers, and with other nonprofits working with the education  community. Additionally, the website provides background about Internet2 by  interest category and also includes a link that users can use to easily  determine whether their school network is connected to Internet2.
