Introduction
My research topic was once again Juvenile Diabetes, also known as Type 1 Diabetes. I did change up my research question a bit from finding if this disease affects people the same or differently, to only researching how it just affects peoples lives. The resources that I have collected talks about the risks that diabetes can cause, and how it affects the lives of others.
Most of the resources that I've collected were from the MCC Library Online Database. The keywords that I've typed were "Type 1 Diabetes," "Juvenile Diabetes," "Interviews with people who have Type 1 Diabetes," and "People with Type 1 Diabetes blogs." With these resources though, my audience can find out similar lifestyles of others (if they live with it or not).
Neithercott, T. (2011, September). Fresh voice: the American Idol star talks about her new album and life with diabetes. Diabetes Forecast, 64(9), 48+.
I found this on the MCC library online database, and found it really reliable. Its a interview with last year American Idol star, Crystal Bowersox, and she talks about her life with diabetes, and how she almost got kicked off of American Idol, because she wasn't taking care of her disease and ended up in the hospital. I found it relible because she explains how dangerous this disease really is. Plus she also talked about how hard it was on her growing up. "You're constantly branded as different growing up" (Bowersox).
Lemond, A. (2011, April 25). The Mom Chronicles: Type 1 Diabetes. Blogspot.com.
I found this on the Blogspot on Thursday, and thought it would be reliable. Why I think this would be reliable, because it interviews a mother with a three year old daughter that has diabetes, and the mother talks about how hard it is on her family and how she helps other people who has it.
Brunk, D. (2011, August 1). Early carotid disease seen in type 1 diabeties. Internal Medicine News, 44(13), 34+.
I found this too in the MCC database and thought it could be useful to my research. It discusses the Carotid Disease found in people with Type 1, and it also give satistics of it that were found by a doctor. Before the doctor found these satistics, she wanted to set out and examine wheather or not type one diabetes had measurable effects on carotid arteries in adolescents and young adults. "Dr. Urbina reported that there were significantly higher proportions of males and whites among cases, compared with controls (55% vs. 34% and 90% vs. 50%, respectively)."
Etingin, O.R. (2011). Diabetes: a major risk factor. Women's Health Advisor, 15(4), 1+.
I found this also on the MCC database, and it seems reliable to me, and really explainatory. It discussed the risks Diabetes could have on a woman heart. "Be sure to have a full checkup every year after the age of 40, with blood sugar and urine sugar measurements. If you're at high risk based on your weight or family history, your hemoglobin AlC should be checked too. This is a measure of the amount of glucose that is bound to hemoglobin in the bloodstream; it reflects average blood sugar over the past three months." (Orli R. Etingin).
Handisurya, A., Bancher-Todesca, D., Schober, E., Klein, K., Tobler, K., Schneider, B., & ... Kautzky-Willer, A. (2011). Risk Factor Profile and Pregnancy Outcome in Women with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Journal of Women's Health (15409996), 20(2), 263-271. doi:10.1089/jwh.2010.2033.
I again found this in the MCC database, and thought it would help in my research. It talks about the different risk factors that pregnant woman with diabetes could have while giving birth or while they are in theirs trimesters.
Miller, H. G. (2005, September-October). Mary Tyler Moore speaks out on stem cell research. Saturday Evening Post, 277(5), 44+.
I found this also in the MCC database, and to me this resource was definitely reliable. Its another interview with someone who has Type 1 Diabetes, and she just talks about helping the JRDF find a cure in the stem cell research. She also answers the myths, trhat people believe, with the real facts. One of the myths she answered was the myth of "insulin being a cure." "It's not a cure; it's a method of keeping alive. It's temporary help, and the minute you stop taking it, you bring on all kinds of threatening problems that will end in death." (Mary T. Moore).
News in brief. (2011). Expert Review of Clinical Immunology, 7(5), 565+.
I also found this in the MCC database, and thought it would be useful in my research. It talks abouth a artificial pancreas that some researchers have been working on and testing for people with Type 1 Diabetes. "The artificial pancreas consists of an abdominal patch that continuously monitors blood glucose levels, and a pump that automatically delivers the required dose of insulin beneath the skin." "The development of the artificial pancreas has taken years of research as correct insulin dosing is an incredibly complex process. This is owing to factors such as physical activity, menstrual and pregnancy hormones, and the extreme variability of blood glucose levels in an individual person in 1 day."
Eddy, C. (2011, September). Love, diabetes style. Diabetes Forecast, 64(9), 76.
Again I found this in the MCC database, and thought it was a really interesting and sweet story. It talks about this lady with diabetes, and how she would hide it from guys she dated, but then she met this one guy, and he has stuck by her ever since. I thought this would really be useful, because it shows how people can still be like everyone else even with this disease.
Conclusion
With the resourses I have collected I'm getting closer to answering my research question and developing an argument to debate. The major themes that I have found were the risks of Diabetes that someone can have. Also I found stories of how this disease can affect one who's actually living with it, or how it may affect their relationships with others. Along with how it can affect a family lifestyle. I don't think I need to find anymore resources, because I believe I found everything I need, but I could find one or two things more just for backup from youtube.
