PR Newswire has an app. Would anyone use it? I don't think press releases are compelling content...

Analysis of where mobile PR trends are at currently now. Conflates PR with media relations, though
unless you’re working in technology, it seems there is a limited take up among journalists in use of mobile to consume PR-related content. A PR Week / CC Group survey bears out our own research among users of PR Newswire for Journalists (PRNJ) that they tend to prefer desktop tools to mobile ones when it comes to reviewing PR material. But this is changing. The surge in social network usage via mobile is impacting how everyone interacts with phones, and over half the media (both new and ‘old’) who access PRNJ or PRNewswire.com own a smart phone and over a third would consider accessing these sites via mobile phone.

Another option for tablet on a budget
after testing out Motorola's Xoom, it's clear the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet has what it takes to compete head to head. Though it's got some growing pains ahead, the young tablet is already a contender. All that's needed before it can really gain momentum is a lineup of killer apps — and a better price.
The app takes advantage of graphics hardware acceleration, which allows the display of high-quality graphics and 3D animations. That’s one of the features of Android 3.0, which debuts in tablets such as the Motorola Xoom in a short time.
One of the interesting features is iReport, which CNN relies upon for user-generated content, such as photos and videos from ordinary citizens.
Such apps are common on the Apple iPhone and iPad. But Google really needs to get marquee apps running in a beautiful way on Android tablets, if it has any hope of catching up with the iPad. The tablet market is going to be the subject of a huge tug-of-war this year.
Example of difference in Androdi v ipad tablet apps.
The free app, which is similar to CNN's app for Apple's iPad, the current leader in the tablet space, differs in that it lets tablet users submit their own news to CNN iReport.
The iPad doesn't have a camera to let users to take photos of news events or film themselves giving their own takes on the news. By contrast, some Android-based tablets, like the Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, do include front and rear-facing cameras.
The new app aims to bring citizen journalism into the tablet age.

My angle here -- the research only talked to smartphone users. That's not the best way to gauge the market, usage or impact of the mobile web. Skewed sample.
But see what they said about mobile web and news
Zokem's January 2011 study looked at over 2,200 smartphone users in both the U.S. and the U.K. Although apps are growing in popularity, they haven't yet become the top usage category on smartphones - messaging is still #1. Messaging, which includes text, multimedia, email, and instant messaging, accounts for 671 minutes of usage per month (active on-screen time).
