To clarify, When I email on my phone, I use revspecies116, when I use google+ on my phone, I use revspecies116, when I use gTalk on my phone, I use revspecies116. When I want to sync contacts to my phone, I use scottwakeman.nexusone... I do not use that account for anything else. I never email with it, I don't google+ with it, I don't gTalk with it.
This is how I got from a bloated 15MB, to a svelte 1.5MB.
It is the only solution, and it is transparent to all apps on your phone. Trust me. Arrange a time for a HangOut (8 others can join in if they want help), and I will show you how I did it with my phone... Just remember the time differences between you (US) and me (NZ) ;) But I really would love to help... -

Edit: To integrate system app updates into your ROM, use Titanium Backup. For example, my GMail app shows (updated) in Titanium's list:
