1896: U.S. Foreign Relations
-
Some old issues continued to find expression, for example, resentment of Great Britain's financial and naval power, and efforts to win Irish-American votes by denouncing British imperialism.
-
Throughout 1896, expansionists gained influence. On February 28 Congress passed a resolution affirming U.S. support to the Cuban rebels, and offering to help Spain negotiate a peace settlement for the island--an offer Spain rejected. One month later, on March 24, Congress approved $50,000 to send to Cuba to aid victims of the civil war. This policy culminated on December 21, after McKinley's victory and the election of a strongly Republican Congress, when the Senate foreign relations committee approved a resolution in which the United States officially recognized the independence of the Republic of Cuba. The war with Spain, beginning in 1898, signaled that the imperialists in Congress had triumphed.

I have lots of bookmarks organized in Firefox, grouped in folders for each course & subfolders within courses (and sometimes folders within folders within folders: PACS –> Genocide –> Rwanda –> Reconcilation). I don’t think Diigo affords infinite nesting, but it allows so many other amazing features that I plan to learn to use to it. Anne & Susan and I spent quite some time exploing the “floating sticky” highlighting feature which allows you or your students to essentially annotate a webpage. And I love the “slideshow” feature. Very cool! Check it out:

LOVE using Pandora to create “atmosphere” in the classroom. Is it emotionally manipulative to provide a “soundtrack” during small group work that makes the kids feel like they’re starring in some kind of inspirational edu-film? Maybe. But I like it. I like playing thematically relevant music, too, like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (listen here) during our PACS unit on the Middle East. Or (modern) Gregorian Chant (listen here) during Frosh lesson on Gregorian Reform.
I’ve been looking for a 2.0 tool that would let me record messages (read: student feedback) to be emailed directly to kids. YackPack was awesome, but they’re now defunct. Vocaroo is ok, but the sound quality seems poor. Grapevine seemed like it would serve my purpose, but now I’m not so su
