TOKYO - An explosion aboard a Philippine airliner flying to Tokyo today killed one person and injured 10, others and forced an emergency landing, Japanese officials said.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

Several hours after the explosion, which occurred at about 11:45 a.m. local time, a caller claiming to belong to Abu Sayyaf, a radical Muslim group responsible for numerous bombings and kidnappings in the southern Philippines, telephoned The Associated Press in Manila and claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The explosion occurred about 960 miles southwest of Tokyo. The Philippine Airlines 747 jet made an emergency landing at Naha, Okinawa, eight minutes after the explosion took place, the airline said.
