February 10, 2007 , GMA News, Passage of anti-terror bill pressed

Saying it is "worth the break" from their campaign, Malacañang pushed lawmakers anew Saturday for the passage of the anti-terrorism bill during the two-day special session of Congress that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo called on Feb. 19 and 20.

Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said the "high urgency" of the bill, which he described as a "linchpin" legislation on government's security and economic agenda, should not be dismissed.

"The high urgency of the anti-terror bill should not be dismissed. Its passage is on the penultimate stage and we believe it would not be too much of a burden for our lawmakers to take a break from the political campaign to act on such an important measure in the national interest," he said.

He added Arroyo "does not want to be distracted from the business of the nation in the heat of the campaign" and continues to focus on issues that are "vital to overall national stability, economic growth and global confidence."

Besides, he said attending the special session to pass the "linchpin legislation" will be a "fine opportunity for collective statesmanship" in the service of the Filipino people.

The anti-terrorism bill has been ratified by the Senate, but the House of Representatives failed to do so for lack of quorum Thursday, the last day of the regular session.

"A special session would be a fine opportunity for collective statesmanship in the service of the Filipino people," Bunye said.- GMANews.TV
