December 31, 2001, Philippine  Daily Inquirer, US' right to land extended,

PRESIDENT Macapagal-Arroyo's blanket authority to allow United States warplanes and vessels to "land, dock, refuel and fly over Philippine territory" has been extended, a foreign affairs official said over the weekend.

The blanket authority, which was given as part of the country's assistance to the US campaign to hunt down the perpetrators of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the US, was supposed to have ended on Dec. 31.

But NSC adviser Roilo Golez said there was no deadline given because the assistance to the Americans was "continuing."

"There was no deadline in the first place. What's the need for an extension? The Americans can come here anytime because they are helping our troops to enhance their fighting capabilities, particularly in the fight against the Abu Sayyaf," Golez said.

The DFA official, who requested anonymity, said the extension was granted upon the recommendation of the Department of National Defense and the National Security Council.

Following the Sept. 11 bombings, the NSC adopted a resolution allowing US vessels and aircraft to enter Philippine territory. Christine Herrera
