ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (Reuters) - The Philippine military said on Friday it recovered skeletal remains believed to be that of an American hostage whom Muslim kidnappers, with suspected links to Osama bin Laden, declared they had beheaded in June.

The remains without a skull, believed to be that of Guillermo Sobero's, was recovered on Friday afternoon in Kaulayan, a remote village between the border of Tipo-Tipo and Lamitan towns in Basilan island, 560 miles south of Manila.

Sobero was one of the three Americans taken hostage along with Filipinos by the Muslim rebel group Abu Sayyaf from an upscale tourist resort off Palawan on May 27.

The bandits claimed they had beheaded Sobero in June, but his body has not been found.
