July 8, 2005, MindaNews, Abu Sayyaf involved in mass kidnapping in 2000 arrested, by Bong Garcia, Jr.,

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Military troops arrested in Basilan last Wednesday an Abu Sayyaf member believed involved in the mass kidnapping in 2000.
Reports reaching the Armed Forces’ Southern Command headquarters said that Abshar Ismael alias Abu Arsad was nabbed in barangay Carbon, Malamawi Island in Isabela City.
The report said that Ismael was arrested after some of the former Abu Sayyaf hostages saw him in the area.
The Abu Sayyaf seized 54 people -- including teachers, pupils and a Catholic priest -- on March 20, 2000. The captives were herded to a former Abu Sayyaf camp in Mount Punoh Mohajid, Sumisip town.
Some of the victims managed to escape or rescued when military troops attacked the bandit camp while the Abu Sayyaf killed Fr. Roel Gallardo and four teachers.
The report said that Ismael is a follower of the slain Abu Sayyaf spokesman Aldam Tilao alias Abu Sabaya, who is also from Malamawi Island.
Ismael was brought to the SouthCom headquarters for further interrogation.
