MANILA, Jan 23 (AFP) -

Two communist New Peoples Army (NPA) women guerrillas were detained after a clash with soldiers in the central Philippines that left one of the women wounded, military spokesmen said Wednesday.

A 10-member NPA unit ran into an army patrol near Abuyog town on Leyte island Monday, sparking a brief firefight, they said.

None of the soldiers was hit and the other guerrillas fled.

Soldiers recovered a rifle, bullets and documents.

President Gloria Arroyo suspended peace talks with the communists last year after the NPA assassinated two legislators.
