June 20, 2001, The Philippine Star, Abu Sayyaf to Launch 'Suicide Attack' in Western Mindanao??

Basilan Island, June 20, 2001 (STAR) A region-wide 'suicide attack' that is expected to create massive damage in Region 9 (Western Mindanao) will reportedly be staged by members of the notorious Abu Sayyaf, according to the Basilan Philippine National Police (PNP) today.

Reports from local RMN radio said the PNP provincial police have obtained information showing that a suicidal squad 2 was formed to carry out the raid.

A certain Kalaw Jajari, alias Kumander Manuk-Manuk Granada of Isabela town, Basilan will reportedly lead the attack. Jajari was said to be a former commander of the Muslim secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Basilan, and is a bomb expert.

There remains no detail on the bandits' specific target of the assault but it was said that it will be launched in the town of Maluso.
