August 15, 2000, The Philippine Star, V'zuela hostage-taker shot dead, by Matthew Estabillo,

A suspected drug pusher was shot dead by operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) during a hostage situation the other night in Soy street, Valenzuela City.

The suspect, identified as Roberto Buendia, 36, was shot several times in the head and body after holding his wife, son, and another child hostage in Leonada and Soy street.

Buendia was rushed to the Valenzuela General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival by attending physicians.

According to Valenzuela City police chief Superintendent Nemesio Neron, the incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. while the city's narcotics unit was conducting an operation against Buendia.

Neron said the suspect had been under surveillance for several weeks now, after they had received reports that Buendia was pushing illegal drugs in the area.

He added that the suspect was about to be arrested in his home in Leonada St. when Buendia sensed the move. Buendia then used his wife and son as human shields in leaving his residence.

He later got hold of one Lorena Narciso, 9, and released his wife and son. Buendia, armed with a grenade, proceeded to Soy street in Sto. Rosario with members of the SWAT hot on his trail.

The suspect forced himself inside the residence of a certain Frosie Acalain and ordered her to close all windows and doors, but the frightened Acalain instead hid inside the bathroom.

Police reports said it was around this time when a SWAT agent was able to get inside Acalain's residence. The agent immediately grabbed hold of Buendia's hand, took the grenade away, then shot him several times at point blank range.

Acalain later came out and saw the bloodied Buendia sprawled on her bed.
