January 9, 1999, PHNO, Marines Attack Abu Sayyaf Hideouts in Sulu

Jolo, Sulu, Jan. 9, 1999 - Military troopers are hot on the trail of Moro extremists blamed for two grenade attacks in Jolo last week that killed at least 11 people and wounded 79.

Southern command chief Lt. Gen. Angelo Reyes said a marine brigade in Jolo, Sulu, was directed ''to relentlessly pursue the raiders and kidnappers.'' The extremist Abu Sayyaf group has been held responsible for the bloody attack on civilians.

Last Saturday 11 people were killed and 76 were injured when a grenade was hurled at the crowd watching firemen put out a blaze in Jolo. A similar attack Wednesday on a restaurant on Basilan island injured three people.

The twin attacks are seen as a retaliation by the Abu Sayyaf, for death of their leader Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani in an encounter with police in Basilan.

The grenades used in the attacks are similar to the one used in a Christmas Eve explosion at a shopping center Zamboanga City, prompting the military to believe it was the work of the Abu Sayyaf.

Additional troops have also been deployed in Basilan following military reports that a breakaway group from the Abu Sayyaf intended to launch further attacks. However, Reyes downplayed the group's strength, saying they were actually ''on the run.''
