MANILA - The Philippines said today that mainstream Muslim guerrillas would help the government battle lawless elements, nearly a month after suspected Muslim radicals killed 53 mainly unarmed civilians.

President Fidel Ramos told reporters an agreement had been signed with the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) as the government searched for the rebels who attacked Ipil town, on Mindanao Island in the south.

The government has accused the radical Abu Sayyaf guerrilla group of spearheading the assault.
