June 25, 2001, Malaya, 12 Soldiers Die in MILF Encounter,

Zamboanga City, June 25, 2001 - At least 12 soldiers were killed when they reportedly encroached on rebel territory on Thursday while pursuing Abu Sayyaf bandits, MILF regional chairman Ustadz Shariff Julabbi said yesterday.

Julabbi said three MILF fighters were wounded during the clashes, which lasted for two days in the jungle of Tuburan town in Basilan.

He added that the rebels seized dozens of high-powered weapons, backpacks and a radio transceiver from the slain soldiers.

Julabbi warned the military anew against encroaching into MILF territories in Basilan, saying, "this would spark tension and renewed fighting."

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said the second round of peace negotiations with their group will resume the last week of July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He said that topping the agenda for the upcoming talks would be the preparation of the mechanics of the cease-fire agreement signed last Friday during the first round of talks in Tripoli, Libya.

He said that the military's suspension of offensive military operations or SOMO and the rebels' suspension of offensive military action or SOMA still exists and it would prevent clashes despite the lack of provisions in the General Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities.

The armed forces declared a unilateral SOMO when the government and the MILF agreed to resume the stalled talks and in response, the rebel group under Hashim Salamat declared their own SOMA. (Malaya)
