MANILA, Jan 25 (AFP) -

A communist guerrilla commander in charge of guarding captured soldiers has surrendered to Philippine government forces in Mindoro island south of Manila, an army spokesman said Friday.

Lieutenant Colonel Jose Mabanta identified the rebel as Rodante Flaminiano, alias Commander Choy, a "communist hardcore" of the New People's Armyresponsible for the abduction of several military officials in the past.

Flaminiano, a guerrilla of 15 years' standing, had recently abandoned his colleagues in Mindoro and gave up his firearms to the military, Mabanta said.

"Flaminiano surrendered because of conflicts with other party members and leaders of the movement arising from different factors, which include disillusionment and hardships," Mabanta said.

The NPA is the armed wing of the underground Communist Party of the Philippines. President Gloria Arroyo suspended peace talks with the guerrillas last year after the NPA assassinated two legislators.
