December 28, 2000, ABS-CBN, Malversation raps filed vs. Mandaluyong cashier

PASIG CITY (ABS-CBN) - Charges of malversation of public funds were filed Thursday against the paymaster of the Mandaluyong City Government over the missing P2.6 million cash in her custody.

Nine days after the discovery of the missing funds, the city government initiated the filing of the case before the Mandaluyong City Prosecutors Office against Juliet Canonizado, 44, head cashier of the city government and resident of Barangka Drive, Mandaluyong City.

Police said they concluded in an initial investigation that Canonizado was allegedly behind the missing funds.

City Police chief Supt, Jose Gentiles said the evidence showed Canonizado knew of the combination of the vault and that there were no other evidence showing forcible entry that would indicate a robbery.

Gentiles said among the evidence presented are results of fingerprint tests by the Philippine National Police (PNP) - Crime Laboratory, aside from allegations Canonizado alone knows the combination of the safe from where the money was taken.

Only the fingerprints of Canonizado were found at the scene of the robbery, Gentiles pointed out.

Investigator Police Officer 3 (PO3) Noli Cortez said they scrapped the plans to conduct lie detector tests since the evidence gathered point to Canonizado as the primary suspect.

Following the findings made by police investigators, city mayor Benhur Abalos recommended the filing of charges against Canonizado.
