ARCHBISHOP Orlando Quevedo, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines president, yesterday enjoined Filipino Catholics to observe Pope John Paul II's declaration of Dec. 14 as a "Day of Fasting, Prayer and Charity for Peace."

In a circular, Quevedo asked all bishops to conduct "appropriate liturgical activities" with the faithful on that date and to encourage them to "share materially with those who are suffering." Quevedo also reminded the faithful about the Pope's declaration that "prayer acquires power if it is joined with fasting and almsgiving."

The Pope had asked that what is saved by fasting be donated to the poor, especially those who are suffering the consequences of terrorism and war.
