ZAMBOANGA, Philippines, Feb 4 (AFP) -

Abu Sayyaf Muslim guerrillas abducted and beheaded a local farmer ahead of the deployment of US troops on the southern Philippines island of Basilan, the Filipino military said Monday.

Relatives found the headless corpse of Jul Peddas beside a trail near the town of Maluso early Monday, three days after he left their house to tend to his farm.

"Our report indicates that the victim was beheaded by the Abu Sayyaf," said Colonel Alexander Aleo, military commander of Basilan.

Hundreds of US troops are mustering in this southern city for joint training with Filipino troops.

The six-month exercises would eventually take some of the American troops to nearby Basilan, where they would serve as armed observers joining Filipino combat missions against the Muslim guerrilla group.

Abu Sayyaf gunmen hold two US missionaries hostage on the island. They have murdered more than a dozen other captives, including American captive Guillermo Sobero.

ABS-CBN television reported from Basilan that the decapitated corpse had his hands tied behind his back and bore torture marks.

It said the victim could have been suspected of being a military informer.
