November 28, 2012, GMA News, Govt forces arrest suspected Abu Sayyaf bandit in Zamboanga City,

Government security forces arrested on Tuesday a suspected Abu Sayyaf member inside a mall in Zamboanga City.

Citing field reports, National Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. on Wednesday identified the suspected bandit as one Algaber Said alias Talha. At the time of his arrest, Said carried a P600,000-bounty for his apprehension.

Cerbo said Talha was nabbed by combined police and military agents inside a mall in Zamboanga City around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Information from police showed that Said was allegedly involved in various criminal activities, including the 2001 Golden Harvest Plantation kidnapping and the siege of the Dr. Torres Hospital in Lamitan, Basilan that same year.

Cerbo said the suspect has since been turned over to the office of the National Bureau of Investigation in Zamboanga City for further investigation and proper disposition.

Described as a radical group having ties with the al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist organizations, the Abu Sayyaf has been blamed for a number of kidnapping and bombing activities in southern Philippines.

Since 2002, a number of US troops have been visiting the Philippines purportedly to train Filipino counterparts in addressing the terror threat posed by armed groups in Mindanao. — RSJ, GMA News
