November 22, 2002 The Philippine Star, Sayyaf now recruiting women? by Roel Pareño,
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Women have become the vanguards of gun-toting machos known as the Abu Sayyaf.

Intelligence reports show the Abu Sayyaf has sent women to search for recruits after a lot of its members have deserted because of the continuing military offensive.

A Basilan official, who asked for anonymity, said the bandits have tapped female relatives to recruit new members to reinvigorate its dwindling manpower.

"The reports that reached us disclosed that the women are mostly relatives of those Abu Sayyaf leaders or members," the official said.

However, Lt. Col. Fredesvindo Covarrubias, chief of the 4th Civil Relations Group, said pressure from troops and policemen would make it hard for the Abu Sayyaf to use women to attract new followers.

"We have received reports on the alleged ongoing recruitment of (Abu Sayyaf) using women and the ground troops are doing everything to check the veracity of the report," he said.

Covarrubias said the military would go after women who help the Abu Sayyaf or any other terrorist group in Mindanao. Roel Pareño
