ZAMBOANGA, Philippines - The military has deployed more troops to a southern Philippine island where soldiers and Muslim guerrillas clashed, officials said today.
They said five rebels from the fundamentalist Abu Sayyaf group were killed in a gun battle in Luuk on Sulu Island on Saturday. One soldier reportedly was killed.
Saturday's gun battle erupted when a group of marines, tipped off about a possible arms landing, checked an area in the coastal town of Luuk and chanced upon the rebels.
