October 8, 2009, GMA News, 1:41 PM, Magnitude-6.7 quake rocks Jolo town in Sulu

A magnitude-6.7 quake rocked Jolo town in Sulu province before dawn Thursday but state seismologists quickly dispelled fears of a tsunami.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) head Renato Solidum Jr. said the quake was recorded at 5:41 a.m., according to a report on dzBB radio.

There was no initial report of casualty or damage.

Solidum said the epicenter was about 315 km off Jolo town, but stressed the quake was not felt much, and that no tsunami occurred as a result of the quake.

For its part, the United States Geological Service said the quake occurred at 5:41 a.m., with the epicenter traced to 280 km southeast of Jolo, Sulu.

It said the epicenter was also 320 km south of Zamboanga, 1,185 km south of Manila, or 2,085 km east-northeast of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The quake is the third to rock the Mindanao area this month; the first was in October 1 with magnitude-4.3 and the second was in October 5 with magnitude-6.6.- GMANews.TV
