JAKARTA—Police in the northernmost province of North Sulawesi have prevented seven Indonesians from illegally entering the Southern Philippines to join a Muslim militant camp there, a report said Sunday.

Police rounded up the seven men as they were waiting for a ship to take them to Mindanao through the porous maritime border between the two countries, the state Antara news agency quoted the head of the North Sulawesi police, Brig. Gen. Jhon Lalo as saying.

He said that the seven were rounded up in Tahuna, a town in the Sangihe Talaud Islands, on Friday following tip-offs from local residents.

Police questioned them but on Saturday released them and sent them back to their respective areas of origin, he added.

The identity of the seven men was not given, but Lalo said they came from various regions of Indonesia such as from Lampung and Padang on Sumatra Island, from Java and from Ambon in the Malukus.

The seven, Lalo said, intended to go to the Abubakar camp in Mindanao, a paramilitary training camp of Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which has been linked to the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) regional terrorist group.

But Lalo said that the seven were not members of the JI which has been said to be linked to the al-Qaeda and has been blamed for a series of bombings in the region, including the Bali bombing in October 2002 that killed 202 people.

Police in Menado, the capital of North Sulawesi, said they had no report of the incident
