MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday announced the arrest of another ranking commander of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf group (ASG), who carries P3.3 million bounty, in Central Mindanao.

PNP Director General Nicanor Bartolome said that Sali Basal Taib, who uses the aliases Gonggong Sali and Abu Husni, was arrested near the Barangay Wal Primary School in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat shortly before noon on Tuesday.

Bartolome said that intelligence operatives of Task Force Sanglahi-A Mindanao Team, led by Superintendent Leonardo Felonia under the supervision of Senior Supt.Abelardo Villacorta, Deputy Director of the PNP Intelligence Group and commander of Task Force Sanglahi, made the successful arrest.

According to Bartolome, Taib is a principal respondent in Criminal Case No. 3608-1164 filed before the Regional Trial Court Branch in Isabela City, Basilan for the kidnapping for ransom and serious illegal detention of 10 workers of the Golden Harvest Plantation in Lantawan, Basilan in June 2001.

Taib is listed in the Department of Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) list of most wanted terrorist with P3.3-million reward offered for information leading to his arrest.

Bartolome said a confidential informant provided the vital information that led to Taib's arrest.

Taib will be presented before the court upon completion of all procedural requirements. (PNA)
