military corruption

March 4, 2002, The Philippine Star, Philippine military discounts reports of Abu Sayyaf "surrender feelers",

Apparently intimidated by the presence of US commandos in Basilan, some Abu Sayyaf commanders have reportedly sent surrender feelers and asked for general amnesty in exchange for the release of their remaining hostages.

Among those who have reportedly offered to turn themselves in were Aldam Tilao and Isnilun Hapilon.

Tilao, better known as Abu Sabaya, acted as spokesman for the terrorist group, but is believed to have taken over as leader since chieftain Khadafi Janjalani disappeared. Military officials believe Janjalani has left Basilan.

Earlier, a cabinet member had also received surrender feelers from the Abu Sayyaf leadership.

The military said the reports of surrender feelers could be a ploy of the Abu Sayyaf to sow disinformation
