Fr. Cirilo Nacorda

August 7, 1994, Seattle Times News Services, Muslim Extremist Group Frees Philippine Priest; War Averted,

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines - Muslim extremists freed a Roman Catholic priest today after two months' captivity, ending a hostage drama that threatened to set off a religious guerrilla war in the southern Philippines.

The extremist Abu Sayyaf Group released the Rev. Cirilo Nacorda, who was abducted June 8 with about 60 other people in a civilian convoy in Basilan, 550 miles south of Manila.

The kidnappers released the Muslim passengers, then killed 15 Christian men before escaping with Nacorda and 21 other Christians, mostly women. The other captives were released after the Basilan government paid a ransom of $7,500.

They demanded $115,000 for Nacorda's release but received nothing, said Vice President Joseph Estrada.

The Abu Sayyaf Group has carried out numerous attacks against Christians.

Bishop Romulo de la Cruz of Basilan and other church officials have said the attacks on Christians could trigger a religious war in the southern Philippines, home of the country's Muslim minority. There are several armed Christian gangs in Basilan, and one, called the Ilaga, threatened attacks against Muslims unless Nacorda were freed.
