April 12, 2002, The Philippine Star, Abu Sayyaf henchman surrenders to in Basilan,

A henchman of the Abu Sayyaf ring leaders surrendered today to the military in Basilan.

Army Capt Noel Detoyato, deputy spokesman for the Armed Forces Southern Command, identified the Abu Sayyaf who surrendered as Itin Sailani, a sub-leader of Bakkal Hapilon.

Sailani, who was operating in Lantawan, gave up to the military in Maluso Friday [12 April], Detoyato said.

Sailani claimed he was forced to yield to the military due to the hard life in the jungle with the continuous military pursuit operations.

"He is presently undergoing tactical interrogation," Detoyato said, citing that the military could get "vital" information from Sailani, being one of the commanders of the bandit group still holding hostages.

The military said Sailani admitted he was an original member of the group when it was organized by slain founder Ustadz Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani.
