MANILA, (ABS-CBN) -- Anticipating a possible backlash, the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1971 has deferred the adoption of President Estrada as its honorary member.

"Although such (adoption) was unanimous within the group, there were reservations expressed concerning the current political crisis," said a ranking member of the group known as the PMA Matatag Class.

"We just didn't press the issue any more owing to its possible implications," said the source.

The decision was reached during the Class Christmas party held last Sunday at the Rennaissance Hotel in Ortigas.

The meeting was attended by two of the more prominant members of the class: Senator Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan and PNP Director Panfilo "Ping" Lacson.

Earlier, it was learned that Lacson had pushed for the inclusion of Estrada in their class as early as February this year during the PMA Alumni Homecoming in Baguio City.

The revival of the President's adoption came at a time when Estrada is facing impeachment trial before the Senate.

Camp Aguinaldo insiders said the move was aimed at expressing the support of the PMA Class 1971 to the embattled Estrada, the country's commander-in-chief.

Last week, National Security Adviser Alexander Aguirre disclosed that the government was monitoring the activities of a military officer purportedly agitating his PMA classmates into taking a leave of absence to support calls for Estrada's resignation.

Though Aguirre didn't identify the said military officer, it it a known fact that Vice President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is an honorary member of PMA Class 1978 whose members were said to be planning to take a mass leave together with PMA Class 1976.

Incidentally, Arroyo's chief security, Army Col. Carlos Holganza, is a member of PMA Class 1978.

Three of Estrada's sons are honorary members of other PMA classes: San Juan Mayor Jinggoy (PMA Class 1972); reserve Air Force Major Jude Estrada (Class 1983) and JV Ejercito (Class 1988).
