Spearfishing is far from a new concept. In fact, it has been around almost as long as man himself. In early times, the use of a pointed stick to kill fish is what determined whether the people in a village ate or not. The gear used consisted only of the pointed stick and was the manner in which a food supply was provided. Today, things are much different. What used to be a means of feeding entire villages is now a hobby or sport. Although some “purists” still fish with pointed sticks, there is some great equipment to use in making your catch.
Spearfishing is now performed through the use of either “spear guns or slings. There are two types of guns, one being elastic powered. The other types makes use of compressed gas. Today, this type of underwater activity has developed into a very popular sport. Individuals who participate do so through scuba, snorkeling or what is termed as free-diving. Just as in any other sport, there are rules. In this case, certain types of mechanical spear guns have been prohibited in particular areas of the world. In addition, many jurisdictions require attention be paid as to the species of fish targeted by the divers. These rues relate to endangered species as well as any “seasonal” fishing restrictions.
