Quick Tips for Advanced Users

This section assumes you have already installed the Diigo Toolbar.

The tips in this section skip a lot of basics and screenshots, and concisely cover the salient features and designs of Diigo. For advanced users,  watching Guided Tour and Flash Tutorial, and then reading these tips  is probably a quick way to become familiar with Diigo.

Quick Tips on Diigo Toolbar   See more details

  • Click on "down-arrow" next to the Diigo button to access "Options", "Sign out", "Help" etc.
  • My bookmarks: your most recent bookmarks are shown in the pull-down menu. You can also enter filter criteria to pull down tagged bookmarks.
  • Search Box: pull-down to specify search category and conduct search using the default search engine in that category. For Internet Explorer, mouse-over the down-arrow to the right of the search button to access other search engines in the same category. For firefox, access other search engines in the submenu.
  • Use the Word find and Highlight buttons to the right of the search box, to find and highlight words in the search box on the current page. (Note that this highlight, unlike highlighting by clicking Diigo button, is not saved)

Quick Tips on Bookmarking      See more details

  • Check "Unread" for pages you want to re-read later. "Unread" pages show up in "My Bookmarks" on the web as darker links. Opening a "Unread" link turns it to "read", and lightens the link color.
  • In addition to the Diigo website, you can simultaneously save your bookmarks with other bookmarking services, as well as locally. Go to the Toolbar Options panel to set up.
  • For Microsoft Internet Explorer, checking "Add to Links" will cause the bookmark being saved in your local folder Favorites/Links, in addition to being saved to our server under a special tag called "Links". The bookmark will then show up there in your browser's Links Bar if it is visible. If you used any other tags in addition to the special tag "Links", then the first tag will be shown as a folder on the Links Bar. (All these may sound complicated, but try it and you will find this is a great way to save frequently used bookmarks)
  • For Firefox, "Add to Bookmarks Toolbar" will do the same, except the local folder is now Bookmarks/bookmark toolbar folder, and Firefox uses the term "Bookmarks Toolbar", instead of "Links Bar".
  • To add bookmarks without installing the toolbar, you can use the Diigolet, or on the Diigo website, use "More Actions" pull-down menu and select "New Bookmarks"

Quick Tips on Tags          See more details

  • Tags should be space-separated, and are case-insensitive.
  • To use a phrase as a single tag, either put quotation marks around the phrase, or leave no space and use hyphen between words.
  • Tags used by other users for the same page will show up as default in the tag input form.
  • Pull-down at the tag input form shows the list of your own tags.
  • Typing directly into the tag input form will show a list of your matching tags.

Quick Tips on the "Public/Private" Settings for Bookmarks and Page Comments

  • Your private bookmarks are only available to you, while your public bookmarks can be seen by anyone on the Diigo.com website. This setting can be changed while re-bookmarking the same page, or on the website by using the "Edit" in the "More Actions" pull-down menu.
  • To protect your privacy, your private bookmarks will be excluded from the "All Bookmarks" search.
  • Public page comments can be seen by anyone, while private comments can be seen by their authors only. Both public and private comments can be deleted by their authors anytime.

Quick Tips on Diigo Highlights and Clippings        See more details

  • To highlight a body of text, select the text and click Diigo on the toolbar or in the right-click menu. If this page has not been previously bookmarked yet, the system will ask you to bookmark first, so that both the highlight and this page will be bookmarked simultaneously. For any page already bookmarked, highlight will show up instantaneously when you click Diigo.
  • A highlight is only viewable to its owner on the original page, and is NOT viewable to the public on the original page unless there are public Sticky Notes associated with it. (This is designed to reduce graffiti on the original webpage)
  • On the Diigo website, all highlights will be shown as clippings along with the bookmarks.  If a bookmark is public, so will be its associated clippings. (This is designed to maximize information sharing)
  • Use the floating menu over highlight to delete it or to add sticky notes. If the floating menu is disabled (in Options), simply left-click it to add sticky, and right-click to delete it.

Quick Tips on Sticky Notes       See more details

  • To add Sticky Notes, left-click a highlight.
  • Public Sticky Notes can be seen on the page by all Diigo members with the Diigo toolbar installed, and its viewing mode set to "Public". Private Sticky Notes are viewable by the author and any forwarded recipients.
  • Public highlights and Sticky Notes should be done with care. To minimize graffiti and spam, we have raised the bar for making public highlights and sticky notes: you need at least two friends in the Diigo community to do so. ( To get a friend, invite one to sign up with Diigo)
  • View Mode on the toolbar: The view mode can be set to public, private, or disable on the toolbar. When set to "public", you can see all highlights and Sticky Notes. When "private", you can see your own highlights and private Sticky Notes. When "disable", you see the original page intact.

Quick Tips on Forwarding Contents     See more details

  • To forward a page, simply click Diigo, and then click the Forward tab. If the page has not been bookmarked, forwarding it will also cause it to be bookmarked automatically. In the forwarded email, the recipients' will see the title of the page along with any highlighted texts on the page. Clicking on the link in the email takes the recipients to an annotated page identical to what you see. (So your private sticky notes and highlights will be seen by the recipients). Note that the recipients do not have to have Diigo toolbar or Diigolet installed!
  • To forward a particular body of text, select the text and click Diigo, and then click the Forward tab. T
  • To forward multiple bookmarks, do forwarding in "My bookmarks" section of Diigo.com. website.
  • To forward contents on some subject, find the bookmark list with appropriate tags and then forward the URL address of the bookmark list page. In fact, any page you see on Diigo.com can be forwarded by sending its URL address. Recipient(s) do not have to be Diigo members.

  • Both full-text search and tag-based search are supported, using the same search interface
  • Searching bookmarks in full-text will search the title, tags, comments, and the full text of each bookmarked page. Thus, when searching for several search words in full-text, the search results are those bookmarks which contain all the search words in its title, tags, comments, or the full text.
  • A rich advanced search syntax is also supported.
  • You can search "my bookmarks" (both private and public), or "all public bookmarks" (everyone's public bookmarks), or a particular member's public bookmarks.
  • Multiple search categories: on the toolbar or through the right-click menu, you can conduct searches in different categories, and in each category.
  • Search categories and search engines can be completely customized.

Quick Tips on Importing and Exporting Bookmarks     See more details

  • Importing bookmarks from your local folders takes just one click.  So is exporting.
  • When importing from local folders, folder and sub-folder names are converted to tags. For example, a bookmark under folder NEWS and subfolder TECHNOLOGY, will have two tags: NEWS TECHNOLOGY.
  • To set the privacy settings of imported bookmarks, first, "Initiate the privacy settings" of all imported bookmarks as either public or private. And then, privacy settings, tags, and title can be further changed individually in the import window before importing, or in batch on the website after importing.
  • Newly imported bookmarks will overwrite the bookmarks already in the Diigo database that have identical URLs. So if you have imported some bookmarks and made revisions to these bookmarks, either in tags or titles, you will lose those revisions if you import the same set of bookmarks again.
  • Importing from other online bookmarking services typically requires first exporting to local folders ad then importing to Diigo. But for del.icio.us bookmarks, importing is very easy
