Highlighting & Clipping Basics

Diigo highlights can be used to mark important information on a webpage, just like you'd on paper. Highlighted text or pictures are also automatically "clipped" to the "My Bookmarks" section.

With Diigo highlighting and clipping,

  • important information can be highlighted on webpages for easy scanning later,
  • snippets of information can be clipped and aggregated, for sharing, editing or easy search and reference later,
  • you can easily direct others’ attention to the most pertinent information on that page.

To highlight any body of text or picture, first select it (by clicking and dragging across it with the cursor), then click on DIIGO, either on the toolbar or in the right-click menu. Note that if you use the right-click menu (shown below), you can simply click on DIIGO, and do not have to click in the submenu.

If this page has not been previously bookmarked yet, the system will ask you to bookmark it, so that both the highlight and the page will be bookmarked simultaneously. For any page already bookmarked, highlight will show up instantaneously when you click DIIGO. The highlighted text will now appear with blue dotted underlines, and highlighted pictures will have a blue border around it.  ( Note: for some pictures, the blue border will be nearly invisible, which we are working on improving.) . ( For different effects, see Highlighting Styles)

To remove a highlight, simply right-click within the highlighted area, and select "DELETE HIGHLIGHT" from the menu, or mouse-over the highlight to see the following floating menu ( can be optionally enabled or disabled in Toolbar Options)

Tips:

  • A highlight is only viewable to its owner on the original page, and is NOT viewable to the public on the original page unless there are public Sticky Notes associated with it. (This is designed to reduce graffiti on the original webpage)
  • On the Diigo website, all highlights will be shown as clippings along with the bookmarks.  If a bookmark is public, so will be its associated clippings. (This is designed to maximize information sharing)
  • If the text you highlight contains hyperlinks, the dotted blue highlighter will skip the hyperlinks so that you can still click on the hyperlinks. And the associated clippings will also preserve the hyperlinks.
  • You can highlight and clip a combination of pictures and text.
  • Using our advanced bookmark search, you can search highlighted contents only, giving you quicker access to what you are looking for.
