Bookmarking Options

Private vs. Public

During bookmarking or importing, each bookmark can be marked Public or Private using the Privacy drop-down arrow. Your private bookmarks are only available to you, while your public bookmarks can be seen by anyone on the Diigo.com website. This setting can be changed while re-bookmarking the same page, or on the website by using the "Edit" from the "More Actions" pull-down menu.

To protect your privacy, your private bookmarks will be excluded from the All Bookmarks search.

Unread

Check "UNREAD" while bookmarking for pages you want to re-read later.

UNREAD pages show up in "My Bookmarks" on the web as darker links. Opening a "UNREAD" link turns it to READ, and lightens the link color.

If you want to revert the status from "READ" to "UNREAD", you can easily do this in your "My Bookmarks" section in 2 ways:

  1. Click More >> under each link and select "unread/read" to toggle the change:

  2. Use More Actions... >>  pull-down menu and select either "Mark as read/unread". Note: you can select multiple bookmarks and do the batch editing at once:

Add to Links/Bookmarks Toolbar

In addition to adding bookmarks to Diigo and other bookmarking services, you can also simultaneously add bookmarks to your browser's links. This is a great way to keep and access your frequently used bookmarks.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer, checking "ADD TO LINKS" in the bookmarking pop-up window will cause the bookmark being saved in your local folder Favorites/Links, in addition to being saved to our server under a special tag called "links". The bookmark will then show up there in your browser's Links Bar if it is visible. If you used any other tags in addition to the special tag "links", then the first tag will be shown as a folder on the Links Bar. (All these may sound complicated, but try it and you will find this is a great way to save frequently used bookmarks)

For Firefox, "ADD TO BOOKMARKS TOOLBAR" will do the same, except the local folder is now Bookmarks/bookmark toolbar folder, and Firefox uses the term "Bookmarks Toolbar", instead of "Links Bar.

For example, if you add a bookmark with tags NEWS INTERNET, and then check the option "Add to Bookmark Toolbar", then the bookmark will be saved to the Diigo website with three tags NEWS INTERNET LINKS:

It will also show up on the browser's bookmark toolbar under a folder named NEWS, as follows:

Page Comments

When adding a link to your bookmarks, you can simultaneously add a general comment or memo about the website into the pop-up window:

Another way of adding a page comment is by using the on-site button below the bookmark's title (in "My Bookmarks")

Please note that Page Comments are not the unique Diigo in-situ sticky notes, as they are not floating comments that appear specifically to a certain portion of the text on the webpage. Instead, you will find them underneath each bookmark when expanded.

Public page comments can be seen by anyone, while private page comments can be seen by their authors only. Both public and private comments can be deleted (but not edited) by their authors anytime

Thus, private page comments can be useful as a page reminder for your personal use. And, public page comments can be used as a "message-board" style of communication about that particular webpage with other users on Diigo website.

Users can delete (but not edit) his own page comments.
