Following similar dire warnings from other top jurists, the Honorary Chief Prosecutor of Supreme Court of Appeals Sabih Kanadoglu said on Friday that Turkey is headed towards theocracy. Kanadoğlu said that the problem in Turkey is not the turban, but the exploitation of religious beliefs by politicians. He said that it is the duty of every free citizen in Turkey, who is aware of his democratic rights, to resist these attempts. Kanadoglu added, “No one can be given the right to eradicate our democracy. Political parties cannot engage in activities against the sovereignty of the nation, against the rule of law and against the principles of secular democracy of our republic. Article 69 of Turkish Constitution clearly states that political parties that conduct such activities are to be closed down permanently”.
