THE former boss of north Cumbria’s hospitals has defended her decision not to suspend a top director despite claims he had assaulted a senior nurse.

Marie Burnham, who ran the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital until earlier this year, insists she took the allegations very seriously.

About 130,000 homes in Cumbria are supplied by water containing added fluoride – and soon that number could be increased.

Health bosses in the county are considering introducing fluoride into more of the reservoirs providing our drinking water.

Longer hours for sexual health clinic - Carlisle News & Star 2nd October 2008

A SEXUAL health clinic for the over-20s in Carlisle is extending its hours to include morning appointments.

The London Road Community Clinic at Hilltop Heights will now be open on Fridays from 9.45am to 11.30am.

Medical staff will offer a range of sexual health services, such as contraception, general advice and referral to specialist services.

HEALTH bosses have decided they would like the option of adding fluoride to more water supplies in Cumbria to be explored further.

Already around 130,000 people in West Cumbria receive fluoridated water but a possible extension of the scheme could mean Carlisle, Penrith, Barrow, Kendal and surrounding areas are also included.

Measures taken by NHS Cumbria, the county’s primary care trust, to put the county’s health finances on a sustainable path for the future has helped turn a £36.7 million deficit in 2006/07 into a small surplus this year – two years earlier than forecast.

Cumbrian GPs 'above average' says survey - Carlisle News & Star 1st October 2008

Cumbrian GPs are performing just above the national average, according to figures released yesterday.

Every practice in England – including all 93 in Cumbria – was rated against a set of performance indicators.

The Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) looked at the care of various clinical conditions, ranging from asthma, heart failure and diabetes to obesity and depression.
