Kristina HurleyAs a first-year computer teacher I found it very useful. I use it often as a way of having my students turn in electronic document assignments (PowerPoint, Word, Publisher… etc.). I can send them documents, assignments, instructions… etc. I have also used it to send assignments to students who were out of school for extended periods. The students also have storage space in their “digital locker” on the site. Initially, I allowed the students to e-mail each other. I found more negatives than positives from this so I blocked their ability to send to each other.
The tools are useful and easy to use. I set up each of my classes as e-mails groups. I restricted some e-mail features. I am set up as an administrator, so any blocked emails come to me. That is nice because I can screen them, then choose to delete or unblock them. The hardest part is getting the logins and passwords in initially. Our network administrator had them set up on a spreadsheet already which really helped. I also have direct access to students’ network drives so when the site is down I still have access to their files.
Overall I’m happy with it. It’s proved useful all year for me. Once you get it set up and organized, I think you’ll see how much you can do with it. Make sure you keep track of their IDs and passwords because they will forget. -
