Why the iPad is Destroying the Future of Journalism
-
Then the apps came out. It was all the same - a proliferation of branded channels.
-
As of 2008, newspaper ad revenue was still 4X Internet ad revenue; that just changed.

When the iPad came out, I was ready to give big media another chance. I thought they might wake up and start exploring new products and business models. I thought they might explore how to integrate with the modern Internet, the distributed and syndicat

Great blog post about how journalism organizations keep trying to apply old business models to new technologies.
-
-
Old media wants to keep the subscription model. It has worked for them. They especially love the high breakage. The only other model they've tested is pay-per-edition; the old newsstand model.
-
We've just seen some numbers on iPad magazine sales. They were not good. Now everyone is speculating, and it is finally sinking in that mobile devices are part of the Internet. The iPad doesn't set us up for a return to pre-Internet business models. The web is not dead. Mobile devices may not be serving up content in a web browser as often as on our laptops and desktops, but regardless what app is used to serve up the content, it is being served from the Internet, and the Internet has changed the world too much for this model to make sense anymore.

Should I be able to share it publicly? Maybe I could share it with a special shortened link that encapsulates a special key - that key could charge me if I share it with my friends and I want them to read it, or it could charge the clicker of the link if

An article from economist Tim Harford, essentially arguing that the iPad is like a prettier RSS.

I read a great article in the Economist the other day on my iPad. I tried to share it with my social network on Facebook and Twitter, but I can't do that with old media.

"No one wants an app for each content source." Why the iPad isn't a saviour for newspapers. "The future of news products need Google-level relevance, Facebook-level social, and Apple-level design." In other words, traditional media need to embrace a new model.

thought they might explore how to integrate with the modern Internet, the distributed and syndicated content model, and the social ecosystem. Then the apps came out. It was all the same - a proliferation of branded channels.
-
The Internet democratizes and distributes. It makes a mess first, products at a higher level of abstraction help you navigate the mess. We've seen this with search and the importance of Google.
-
iscovery through social relevance is increasing and is now the dominant experience for discovering content in a "subscription" setting, i.e. not search or going to a news site directly.

It's not really about the iPad. It has some thinking about syndication of content --that's where the traffic flow is, not branded channels.
-
-
The New York Times was founded in 1851, maybe it was cool just to get a newspaper. This is not 1851.
-

-
The success of search, social, and design seem to indicate that the future of news products need Google-level relevance, Facebook-level social, and Apple-level design. -
need for media companies to refocus their efforts on their core competency; journalism
-
need for new platforms that allow these media companies to syndicate
-
The good news for media is that when they embraces the new model, I think they will make far more money than they ever have in the past due to the combination of broader distribution and better targeting leading to larger ad revenues

If journalism is going to rediscover a model that works, it has to figure out how to integrate with the social web.
