rbeile4englDESCRIPTION: This brief clip follows that work of a kiwi bird as he creates a landscape on the side of a mountain. At the end of the short film we learn that the kiwi commits suicide in order to feel a few moments like all the other birds that can fly. This is a powerful film that I show my students every year as a part of different units. It's relevant to discussions about individuality, differences, choice, culture, peer pressure, and such literary ideas as perspective, character, plot, theme, and so on. Often it is easier for students to understand complex topics and ideas when they can see it illustrated; then they are able to make personal connections and better understand the themes as we encounter them in other texts throughout the unit.
