That brings up another distinction: the difference between spirituality and religion. I use the term religion to refer to the formal, and often public, structure through which people worship God. Spirituality is the experience of, or the desire to experience the Divine. Religion tends to be behavioral; spirituality, more experiential. Spirituality is often (but not always) a private matter. Some people, of course, are both spiritual and religious.
