Interestingly, the only definition that comes up using a "define:" search is on Wikipedia. I expected to have more choices. I did find out, however, that the term "strategic communication" is born out of the defense/military sector, but has since been appropriated by a number of other industries (UW Madison Libraries was recently hiring for a strategic communications coordinator). Having perused a few sources online, I did find a definition that summed up well the tenor and purpose of strategic communication. The article discussed strategic communication as a way to broker participation, consensus, and buy-in for school systems in times of change. The definition provided by Francis M. Duffy, school administrator, has important connections and parallels with the library environment, when she states, "Strategic communication connects a school district's vision, mission and strategic goals to the needs and aspirations of a community and its children, and this kind of communication gives purpose to the work that educators do in their school districts" (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0JSD/is_4_65/ai_n25149056/). This definition reminds me of the two-street of public relations communication discussed in Newsom and Haynes.

An example I found fitting with this definition, as well as building upon class discussions is the White House's Briefing Room Blog. The blog purportedly supports the three main communication priorities of the new Administration: communication, transparency, and participation. Interestingly, comments are disabled on the site, but as we can see in this posting, folks have found ways to interact with the text using sticky notes.

This is an amzing step forward! I hope the public can step forward and take advantage of this opportunity. We'll have to wait and see where they will post these. I didn't notice a comments section on this post but maybe this is the exception.

Seems like President Obama isn't opening comments to political chatter, but only for ideas about specific legislation that he will sign.

        He's results oriented, for sure.

But I wonder if a bit of "chatter" isn't useful - gives one a sense of the "mood" or something... Opening comments also shows a willingness to "listen" to things that might not be on the official agenda. After all, genius isn't the exlusive property of the "experts."

Spam is easily dealt with, and if the President of Iran can open his blog to comments (check it out at http://www.ahmadinejad.ir/), why can't the President of the United States, and "leader of the free world" do the same?

A short time ago, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States and his new administration officially came to life. One of the first changes is the White House's new website, which will serve as a place for the President and his administration to connect with the rest of the nation and the world.

    • Transparency -- President Obama has committed to making his administration the most open and transparent in history, and WhiteHouse.gov will play a major role in delivering on that promise. The President's executive orders and proclamations will be published for everyone to review, and that’s just the beginning of our efforts to provide a window for all Americans into the business of the government. You can also learn about some of the senior leadership in the new administration and about the President’s policy priorities.
