A relatively minor increase in troops, a promise of greater cooperation from the Iraqi prime minister, a small infusion of reconstruction money -- not only have we heard all this before, but it doesn't amount to much. Bush's overall strategy seems likely to remain wholly unchanged: To keep U.S. troops in Iraq as long as it takes for the Iraqi government to start functioning effectively. That means using American bodies and firepower, pretty much indefinitely, to prop up a country racked by civil war and chafing under occupation. That means the American death count ticks on, with no end in sight.

DeFrank also writes, in a counterpoint to the Bolten narrative: "Outside Republican sources report that except for isolated pockets of realism, the West Wing bunker hasn't yet absorbed Bush's diminished power. "'The White House is totally constipated,' a former aide complained. 'There's not enough adult leadership, and the 30-year-olds still think it's 2000 and they're riding high.' "One White House assistant insisted to a friend last week that the election was merely a repudiation of Bush's execution, not his policies. "'They don't get it,' a GOP mandarin snapped. 'The Iraq report was their brass ring to pivot and salvage the last two years, and they didn't grab it.'"

And simply by taking a baby step outside his protective bubble and fielding unscreened questions (most, but not all of them, softballs) from a starry-eyed, solidly red-state audience, he garnered buzz about being forthcoming. But he wasn't. Ultimately Bush unplugged gave a performance of remarkably little substance. There was no new thinking on display. There were no real insights shared. Instead, we heard mostly restatements of policy, familiar phrases and even whole stories recycled from the 2004 campaign.

Luna LoreI continue to mull why the mainstream press -- and more specifically, the elites within it -- reacted so negatively to satirist Stephen Colbert's performance at Saturday's White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
