I love this site because of how nicely it plays w/ our SMART
Boards. It has become a great tool for initiating discussions in ELA
classrooms. Simply hit the “Random” button and discuss the word w/ your class. You
can of course use this as a vocabulary extension activity as well. I worked w/
one class using Visuwords where we tried to predict (as a class and in small
groups . . . nice way to allow for differentiation) related nouns, verbs, etc. This
activity created engaging classroom discussion!

In the schools where we have access to a SMART Board we use the pens to write
our predictions, capture them to the Notebook and then discussed the discrepancies.

It’s interesting how visuwords is two in one! Dictionary and Thesaurus. When I personally consult a dictionary I normally check out the first line which is usually noun or verb definition. But with visuwords, I can easily go through all part of speeches. It is a good tool for ELL students at the high school level, as it will also build their vocabulary. My concern would be with the IEP students, like those who suffer from attention deficient. Would this website confuse them more by giving them over 20 definitions for just one word?

This is a great website! I used this in introducing my students to the new vocabulary for our unit on ecosystems and my students all told me that we should have used this site earlier in the year. I also saw an improvement in my students depth of knowledge around the vocabulary words given after using this site.

My question to you is, do you think that students need to have some idea of the meaning of the term before they search for it on this website?
