Alexis SimonettaVisuwords is a text based site that offers not only help with finding definitions and synonyms but also gives a visual of how these words can be related. The site offers the ability to make a word web. The web gives information on many uses of whatever word you may choose. There are symbols that state if words oppose, cause, are a derivative, are similar to, is a part of, and among other things it offers what kind of word it may be (noun, verb, adjective, adverb). It not only offers a visual look at the word but it gives a definition of each word it finds. The usage of this site could happen in almost any core classroom. The vocabulary in a music classroom is often looked over when entering other subject but with this site you can correlate musical terms into real world situations. This can strengthen the understanding the students will have with the musical terms introduced. It offers them another way to understand the implications of the words.

anroberson06This tool allows the student to enter one word they know and see related terms, narrower terms, broader terms, as well as explore the relationship between those words. I will use this site during the beginning stages of the research process, when I ask students to spend time brainstorming broader and narrower terms, and synonyms for their topics. This tool supports UDL because students can manipulate the word map, dragging the various elements across the screen. Furthermore, the student is engaged in understanding the relationship between words; the relationship between terms is shown using colors and shapes that are explained on a key on left-hand side of the screen.

Heather GrazadoThank you Kristy for posted this resource to your feed. I like the layout better than visualthesaurus. It is free, the sight is clean and well organized. The only draw back is that it is build with Adobe Flash. Therefore it will not fun on an iPad. It also has more detail then younger or lower functioning kids may need with the colored lines that explain relation and parts of speech.

clautz22Visuwords is a visual dictionary, thesaurus and brainstormer all in one. Students can enter words into the insertion field and immediately be given access to definitions, words and ideas associated with their given word or even acronym.
This website has many strengths as it could be used for a discussion starter in countless classes, ranging from math, to science, to history and most importantly in language arts. It is easy to use and straight to the point.
I honestly can not say that there are many weaknesses for this website, however if I had to find one I would say it is not very diverse. It only performs one "trick" so to speak, but it definitely does a great job with that one trick!
In my class, I would love to use this to introduce new words, topics or activities. I see it as a great discussion started and a great way to get students to brainstorm. It is also a great example of brainstorming that is created quickly and is amazing for visual learners.
When evaluating this resource, teachers must realize that it has one main purpose and use it just for that. I believe this can be a great resource and a great website to get students thinking and talking!-

helfenkAn online graphic dictionary. This site gives all that a written dictionary does, but it is in color. Readers can use the color code to determine parts of speech, derivations of, word forms and connections to other words.
Weakness: Some students will have difficulty following lines and colors. -

It also provides connections and links with different colors or visual appearance to explain the type of connection. For example, it can provide the meaning of the word, what it is a part of or what it entails, what it derives from, what it is similar to, and other options. I love this site because of how nicely it plays w/ our SMART
Boards. It has become a great tool for initiating discussions in ELA
classrooms. Simply hit the “Random” button and discuss the word w/ your class. You
can of course use this as a vocabulary extension activity as well. I worked w/
one class using Visuwords where we tried to predict (as a class and in small
groups . . . nice way to allow for differentiation) related nouns, verbs, etc. This
activity created engaging classroom discussion!
In the schools where we have access to a SMART Board we use the pens to write
our predictions, capture them to the Notebook and then discussed the discrepancies.
Let me know how you use it in your classroom!

My question to you is, do you think that students need to have some idea of the meaning of the term before they search for it on this website?
