Wow!!! I was trying to figure out when and why this happened. What I found is this war took place around 3067 BCE. So these are images of the idols being washed ashore after all this time???
No, if you read the commentary at the bottom of the page you get a good idea of what was going on. It apparently was right after a festival that has something to do with this war and the next day, or morning, the tides washed all the idols that were sent out to sea for the festival back onto the beach. The reason this is happening is because the idols are made out of a non-biodegradable plaster of paris rather than the traditional reed and biodegradable material. The original would simply break up and dissolve in the ocean not causing what happened on this beach. Poignant example of the commodification of even religion and the loss of traditional knowledge and ways of doing things...
