The 'cross' on the top of Hot Cross Buns originates from Medieval times when Bakers used to cut crosses in their loaves to ward off evil spirits. The practise was banned in the 17th Century because it was thought too 'Catholic' and only special buns made for Good Friday were allowed in token of the 'Crucifixion'.
