  • Gladwell's epidemics are social. He believes that many ideas, products, messages, and behaviors we find in society can be characterized by their rapid, exponential spread through our population. Though his book describes epidemics of all kinds of phenomena, he does not precisely define what the phenomena under discourse are.
  • vens are the information gatherers of the social network. They evaluate the messages that come through the network and they pass their evaluations on to others, along with the messages. We can view mavens as regulators of the network because they have the power to control what flows through the network.

  This source is an essay that describes how the "characters" in Gladwell's novel appear on social media. The author, after giving an introduction on what "Tipping Points" generally are, describes how the three laws of epidemics can profoundly affect the behaviors of message-travel within social networking sites.

  This essay supports my thesis as I can use it to gain the necessary general background information on how the connectors, mavens, and salesmen in Gladwell's novel apply in social networking. This includes the various roles they play (ex. Connectors = socialites, mavens = info gatherers). In addition, I can apply the Law of Context to a message or post on a website because the messages' effect depends on its audience. Overall, this general background information can be used as an introduction to how the increasing popularity of social networks can lead to a Tipping Point.
