Will government be mentioned in all those speeches today? I tend to doubt it. Government is now a bad actor, a problem to be solved. You won't get a cheer out of the crowd by extolling the wonders of government. But the Constitution is a governmental document, a blueprint for how to rule. We celebrate it but not the institution it created.
I think maybe a nice speech about how useful taxes are would be a good idea today. Perhaps then we could sing a stirring song about how government programs help the poor. Then we could finish up with the rocket's red glare and everybody would go home to their nice safe houses.
Maybe next year.
In which we say hurrah for big government and sing laud for a functioning bureaucracy.
