Elizabeth DrakeThis article is a report on several classes taught by University of Florida professors using Second Life. Paul Fishwick is a UF computer science and engineering professor whose avatar in his Second Life classroom leads discussions among some 30 other avatars controlled by upper-level UF undergraduate and graduate students in Fishwick's Aesthetic Computing course. Fishwick and other professors either use or consider using Second Life in lieu of or along with a real classroom for many reasons. \n\nMy specific interest in creating a virtual classroom that meets in real-time is to assess whether such a classroom might work to help eliminate teacher bias based on demographics like race, ethnicity, age, physical disability, and gender in the classroom by having students present their physical selves through avatars of their own choosing. However, it is extremely helpful for me to see how others use Second Life for various purposes.
